Editing

In the courses I teach, I provide student writers with feedback on their work and help them practice peer review, revision, and editing. I also have professional experience with developmental editing and copy editing.

From 2014 to 2017, I worked as an editorial assistant for the academic journal Western American Literature. I copy edited and checked sources in article manuscripts to conform with MLA and University of Nebraska Press style guidelines.

In 2012, I worked as an editorial assistant for a Lincoln-based writer, psychologist Mary Pipher. I took dictation, provided feedback on drafts and revisions, and copy edited the manuscript of The Green Boat (published by Riverhead Books in 2013).

Before graduate school, from fall 2007 to summer 2009 I served as the director of communications at my undergraduate alma mater, Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. In this administrative position I planned and executed all strategic college communications. I implemented a brand identity project, provided editorial expertise and project management for some fundraising and recruitment publications (including ghostwriting and copy editing to AP style), edited the alumni magazine, directed the news bureau, promoted campus events, published an e-newsletter, and oversaw the content and redesign of the Web site. I also managed a graphic designer and student workers.
