I’m a writer and researcher who investigates relationships among humans, plants, and places. I’m the Director of the Perennial Cultures Lab at The Land Institute. I lead a team devoted to collaboratively advancing social and cultural research and educational efforts like civic science that feature transdisciplinary learning with communities to help realize more just, diverse, and perennial agricultures.
My most recent project, co-edited with Liz Carlisle, is the collection Living Roots: The Promise of Perennial Foods. Come connect and be in community with us at Prairie Festival 2026.
I grew up in rural Kansas, and my curiosity about grassland stories and plants led me to earn a PhD in English and Great Plains Studies. I love rocky prairie hillsides. My writing and publications use creative and academic forms to investigate Great Plains culture and agriculture, literature and ecology, ethnobotany, pedagogy, transdisciplinary and participatory methods, and crop domestication.
